Why 5-Free?

 What does 5-free mean?

When nail polishes are listed as "5-free", it means that they don't contain these top  5 dangerous chemicals commonly found in nail polish: Camphor, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and Formaldehyde resins.

Why should I buy 5-free polishes instead?

Studies have shown that nail polishes with those harmful chemicals can damage your body. Some of the most popular brands (I'm not going to list them because I don't want to bash on any nail polish company, but you can research it) include these harmful chemicals in their formula because they feel that it increases the quality of their polishes. However, it is possible to formulate good polishes without using these chemicals. It is important to know what chemicals are in your nail polishes as it can have a serious impact your health. One bottle of nail polish goes a long way and although 5-free polishes can be more expensive than cheap or popular polishes, it is better for your health's sake. As I was doing research to start up Shiny Nail Polish, I found some pretty shocking information about these chemicals that I was not aware of. Hopefully, I can spread this information and spread knowledge regarding these chemicals.

Camphor

Camphor is poisonous and is used to prevent decay of dead insects! When this chemical is inhaled (especially in large doses), it can cause nausea, dizziness, and headaches.

Toulene

This chemical is also found in gasoline and is linked to problems in the central nervous system as well as numerous reproductive disorders. In terms of short term effects, it can cause weakness, nausea, fainting, and headaches. Chronic exposure is linked to anemia, lowered blood cell county, liver/kidney damage, and may affect pregnant women.

Dibutyl Phthalate

Long exposure to this chemical can cause reproductive problems, endocrine disorders, gynecological diseases, and respiratory tract problems. Studies have also shown that this can cause cancer.

Formaldehyde

This chemical is also used to preserve dead animals! It can cause inflammation of the skin, possible chemical burns, and may even cause heart rhythm disorders in more extreme cases. Formaldehyde exposure has been associated with leukemia.

Formaldehyde Resins

This is a synthetic resin made with formaldehyde as a base ingredient. Some nail polish companies advertise as formaldehyde free and use formaldehyde resins instead, which is not as harmful, but still harmful as formaldehyde is the main ingredient. It can cause skin irritations and respiratory problems.
